Perfect premises help David focus on a new career

Uney Photographyfront

Photographer David Uney’s new business is already steeped in history.

David only launched Unique Photography during 2010 and moved into new premises in Paragon Arcade, Hull, just before Christmas. But he was quickly made aware of the building’s traditions.

“While I was preparing the studio and gallery a lady called in and said her Grandfather had a studio many years ago,” said David.

“And a couple who used to visit my stall in Just Save Market said they had some photographs that were taken here around 100 years ago.”

David’s interest in photography dates back around 25 years and developed from his passion for wildlife.

It became a career after a serious motorcycle accident curtailed his career as an auto electrical engineer.

“The accident was a long time ago but it took its toll over the years and in 2008 I had to give up working,” said David.

“I was on sick for a year and then I couldn’t get a job anywhere because my experience of other fields was virtually nil – who wants to employ someone in his late 40s who has a bad knee and a bad back and doesn’t have a reference from a previous employer because he’s been working for himself for 25 years?”

So David started his photography business from home, move to Just Save Market and then expanded to Paragon Arcade premises which double as a gallery and studio.

The walls are adorned with some of his shots of wildlife, a portfolio he intends to develop when time allows more travel to exotic locations. David is also photographing portraits, weddings and pets and taking commissions for other work.

“It’s been a good start but then these are great premises,” he said.

“You get a lot of people walking along here and a lot of them have shown interest in what we are doing.

“I really like the feel of the place, the antiquity of it and the fact that it used to be a photographic studio in the past.”

Such a long history brings with it the possibility of... haunting!

“I’m pretty sure we have a visitor upstairs,” said David.

“Every now and then I notice that one of the pictures has been moved slightly, so it’s probably one of the old photographers making sure things are just how he likes them.”
