Celebrating city centre businesses

The very best businesses and their employees Hull has to offer have been celebrated at a glittering awards ceremony at the Bonus Arena.

A total of 300 guests attended the Hull Business Improvement District Awards on Friday 21 February where the great and the good were recognised at a vibrant black-tie dinner with live entertainment.

From small beginnings, the HullBID awards has rapidly grown in seven years to one of the most anticipated events on the calendar, and this year was no exception.

Catherine Goble, Marketing & Events Co-ordinator at HullBID, said: “It’s a great event that has grown from a small buffet when we first started seven years ago to a three-course meal in a large venue with 300 guests.

“Every year we get more and more entries, with some very worthy winners. It was a very difficult decision for the independent judging panel to choose the shortlist, which shows what brilliant businesses and people we have in the city centre.

“There was a particularly diverse mix that got involved this year, which is great to see. Hopefully all our member businesses and organisations recognise what a good awards ceremony it is and benefit from the coverage they get from taking part.

“The Bonus Arena works very well as an event space, and a big thank you also goes out to all the sponsors that enabled us to put on such an excellent celebration.”

Eleven prestigious prizes were handed out in a range of categories from Safe City and Innovative Marketing, to Dressed to Impress and Contribution to the Community.

The shortlist for the awards was selected by an independent panel including John Netherwood, of The Civic Society, The Chamber Acorn Fund’s Craig Simpson and the Mail’s Barnabas Stephenson.

This year, judges picked Hull Minster as their Outstanding Contribution winner, recognising the building’s multi-faceted function. An iconic landmark in Hull’s city centre, Hull Minster played host to 250 events in 2019 – not least the HullBID Awards ceremony.

From musicals and theatrical performances to health awareness days and education workshops, the Minster acts as a hub for a range of activities in the area.

Hull Minster provides a sacred space of worship, a social and cultural hub and continues to be a force for good within the community.
