Combatting Crime During Lockdown
23 April, 2020

Many of you will have seen the images in the media of the deserted streets in our city centre. Even looking at them is something of a surreal experience, and it’s even stronger for the people who have to come in for work and who live in the area.

It is important you know that, even with all the disruption, HullBID is in regular contact with Humberside Police and the team operating the Civic 1 CCTV system. We’re receiving regular updates about the number and nature of crimes being committed, and about the efforts being made by Humberside Police to prevent crime in the first place.

Crime in the city centre and surrounding area was down by 11 per cent from mid-March to mid-April and in the city centre itself there were reductions in several categories, notably burglary, shop theft and criminal damage.

What we are finding, of course, is that the Police are also tackling matters which until recently weren’t even classified as offences but which are now seen as a breach of coronavirus restrictions, such as group gatherings and operating non-essential shops.

The Police remain committed to dealing effectively with all crime in the city centre and as part of that are monitoring premises closely, including alleyways and concealed doorways. We’re conscious that some of you may not become aware of a crime having been committed until you return to your premises but if you do see anything suspicious, for example on your own CCTV system, please report it in the usual way.
