Level 3 Illustration students at Hull College have been unleashing their creativity to produce original artworks to feature in a winter themed art trail around the city centre this Christmas.
In partnership with HullBID, over 50 young people from the college have taken part in an innovative work experience project that will result in an engaging trail for the public to explore during November and December. Winter Windows will feature 12 of the artworks by the students printed onto vinyl and displayed in shop and business windows across the city centre.
HullBID Events, Marketing and Social Media Manager, Victoria Yates explained “Inspired by the concept of community advent trails, Winter Windows will showcase the talents of Hull’s next generation of creative professionals and encourage visitors to Hull to explore and discover our amazing city.
“Utilising windows to showcase the young people’s work will add a vibrant touch to the street scape over the festive period and means that the students get to see their work realised on a large scale for all to enjoy. It has been brilliant to be able to provide the students with a live brief to work towards and the results are incredible.”
With an element of competition, only 12 of the students work will be featured in the trail. These were chosen by a panel comprising of members of the business community who have sponsored the trail; Beth Fell from Allenby Commercial, whose newly opened Monocle building will play host to one of the windows and Tina Swann from Wykeland’s technology and creative hub C4Di which will be another location. They were joined by Hull College’s Head of Competition Gina Hobson and HullBID Executive Director Kathryn Shillito.
Lecturer Laura Johnson said “This project has been a fantastic opportunity for our students to experience what it’s like to work as a professional artist submitting work to a panel for selection. The standard of work has been incredibly high with the students really engaging in the process to embrace this opportunity to have their work exhibited on such a large scale. My colleagues and I are incredibly proud of all their hard work and I can’t wait to see their efforts on display in the city.”
The students whose artwork will feature in the trail are: Chloe Hanna, Evie Sikorska, Kacy-Leigh Taylor, Ellen Irons, Matsu Parker, Xavier Rogers, Storm Pritchard, Poppy Brown, Alec Gheorghe, Macie Watson, Amy Mason and Emily Bettles.
In a short presentation following the judging, all the participating students received a certificate to acknowledge their hard work and Matsu, Evie and Kacy-Leigh were awarded special prizes by Head of Competition Gina Hobson.Tina commented “C4Di is delighted to be sponsoring this exciting initiative and it has been a privilege to be part of the selection panel. I am blown away by the standard of the work and it’s fantastic to see so much developing talent. I have no doubt we will see some of these young people in C4Di in the future working alongside other creative industries and contributing to the vibrant scene we have in Hull.”
The trail which is also kindly sponsored by Hull City Council, Wykeland, Lush, John E Wright, The Hull Trinity House Charity and Savills’ Queens House building will launch on Thursday 20 November and run until Sunday 4 January.
