Prospect Shopping Centre encourages culture vultures to descend on Vintage Tea Dances

The city’s oldest shopping centre is launching a brand new Vintage Tea Dances event in the run up to its 40th Birthday celebrations.

Prospect Shopping Centre has teamed up with vintage singer Ruth Getz to launch the events, which will give visitors to the centre an opportunity to dance and socialise with other shoppers.

It’s the first event of its kind to take place at the centre and falls under the shopping centre’s Prospect for Culture series, which will feature a whole range of different cultural events in the run up to 2017.

The first Vintage Tea Dance launches on Thursday, June 12 and takes place upstairs at the thriving strEAT foodcourt, which opened at Prospect Shopping Centre six months ago and has been a huge hit since.

Another two tea dances will take place on July 10 to mark the centre’s 40th Birthday celebrations and on August 7 to fall in line with the 100th anniversary of World War One.

Lee Appleton, centre manager at Prospect Shopping Centre, said: “The introduction of the Vintage Tea Dances marks the start of an exciting new events programme here at Prospect Shopping Centre. It’s about us bringing shoppers together to socialise and celebrate cultural diversity in the build up to 2017.”

Singer Ruth Getz, who lives in west Hull, said: “I’m really looking forward to performing at this exciting new series of events at Prospect Shopping Centre. It’s great to see a city centre shopping venue hosting such a unique event, and for me to be given the opportunity to be involved. I will be singing plenty of songs from days gone by and hope those who attend will enjoy either just listening or getting up for a dance as well.”

Prospect Shopping Centre – which attracts an average of 625,000 visitors per month and is on track for footfall figures of 8.5million in 2014 – recently appointed an award-winning marketing and events agency to raise its profile as part of its 40th birthday celebrations and in the build up to the UK City of Culture 2017 year.
