Professionals step up for justice in Hull’s first Legal Walk
21 May, 2025

The Hull Incorporated Law Society and The University of Hull have joined forces to step up for justice by organising Hull’s first Legal Walk in aid of the Access to Justice Foundation.

Due to take place on Wednesday 4 June, the Legal Walk will see legal professionals and their families and friends walk 10k to raise funds for legal agencies who offer free advice to those who need it most.

The sponsorship generated will go to the Access to Justice Foundation, a UK based charity which raises funds and distributes them to organisations, who deliver free legal advice and support to those marginalised and vulnerable in society.  The Foundation’s funding enables the challenge of unlawful employment discrimination, helps to  prevent young families from being made homeless, supports disabled people to avoid poverty and helps victims of torture and sexual violence rebuild their lives.

Legal Walks have previously taken place annually in a number of towns and cities across the UK, but this will be the first event of its kind in Hull. A driving force behind the introduction of Hull’s Legal Walk, organiser Wayne Walker, member of the Hull Incorporated Law Society and Director, Solicitor and Head of Compensation Clinical Negligence at Williamsons Solicitors said:

“There is currently a funding gap of £15-20 million in the UK for people who need help to access justice. This situation is only being exacerbated by the cost of living crisis, making initiatives such as the Legal Walk hugely important. The Legal Walk will generate much needed financial aid to help mitigate this shortfall and provide assistance to those who really need it.

“I would urge anyone who wants to help to join us on the walk. You don’t have to be a member of the legal profession to take part - all are welcome!

The 10k walk will start at the Hull Combined Court Centre, setting off at 17.30.  The walkers led by lead walker High Sheriff, Mike Rice, will make their way to the University of Hull, where they will stop for refreshments sponsored by Wilberforce Barristers before returning to the city centre.

Fellow organiser Laura Milner, Director of Legal Advice Centre and Director of Clinical Legal Education at the University of Hull said:

“Both Wayne and I are immensely proud to be introducing the Legal Walk to Hull. It’s a fantastic opportunity for us to show our support as a city to this incredibly worthwhile cause. Not only will the walk raise awareness of the difficulties and challenges facing the advice sector, it will also generate much needed funds to help get free legal advice to those who require assistance most. Many thanks in advance to our lead walker the High Sheriff Mike Rice, all who support and join us on the walk and our generous sponsor Wilberforce Barristers.  ”
