Maritime Tales Week returns to Hull city centre this half term
Maritime Tales Week returns to Hull city centre this half term
21 October, 2021

A treasure trove of seafaring culture will take place across Hull as Maritime Tales Week returns to the city for this October half term.

A packed programme of events celebrating Hull’s rich maritime heritage will run from 23 to 30 October. The city’s significant seafaring history will be brought to life with a varied programme for children and adults including storytelling, poetry and creative writing workshops, competitions, talks, music and craft activities.

Maritime Tales returns for 2021 following a successful maiden voyage for the week-long celebration of Hull’s nautical culture which first took place in October last year. As lockdown restrictions have eased, this year’s programme will feature in-person events as well as online. The online programme includes a nightly ‘book at bedtime’ feature, presented by the Hull Maritime Foundation, with contemporary popular maritime stories retold by well-known local faces.

A maritime trail with riddles created by local writer and author Joanna Walsh will also feature across a number of locations across the city centre. A map of the trail will be available at a number of locations including libraries, museums and from the welcome pod at Paragon Interchange. Each location will have its own riddle related to Hull’s maritime story for people to solve.

Councillor Daren Hale, Leader of Hull City Council, said: “It’s fantastic to welcome Maritime Tales Week back to the city in recognition of Hull’s legacy as one of the greatest maritime cities of the world. With a hugely varied line-up of events this year there’s something for everyone to enjoy as we celebrate and rediscover our seafaring history.”
