King Charles set to reign at Hull Trinity Festival
King Charles set to reign at Hull Trinity Festival
19 September, 2013

Last time King Charles came to Hull he was turned away at the gates.

Three hundred and seventy-one years later and a new King Charles is expected to receive a much warmer welcome. The 28 year old singer-songwriter from West London will headline the Hull Trinity Festival on Saturday 21st September, a free music event showcasing local and national music talent in the heart of Hull’s Old Town.

Described as a ‘glam-folk’ rocker, King Charles was born ‘Charles Costa’ in 1985 and has been writing music since the age of 17. A classically-trained musician, in 2009 he beat thousands of other hopefuls to win the International Songwriting Competition in Nashville, Tennessee, with his song ‘Love Lust’.

King Charles’s debut album, Loveblood, was released in May 2012 and he has also gone on to support the critically acclaimed Mumford & Sons on their UK and US Tours. King Charles will also be supported by a whole host of local acts before taking to the Main Stage in Hull’s Trinity Square at 6pm on Saturday, the bands include: The Black Delta Movement, Patrick Joseph Tobin, Tayala, Young Jack and The Tennents.

Building on the success of other successful Hull festivals, such as Humber Street Sesh and Freedom, the event is designed as a dedicated showcase for the region’s musical talent – as well as giving a boost to evening economy businesses in Hull’s Old Town.

The three-day festival will come to a climax with Britpop band Dodgy, who are headlining the Main stage on Sunday 22 September with support from The Talks, Counting Coins, The Jody McKenna Band, The Quicksilver Kings, The Mighty and the Moon, Littlemores, Streaming Lights, and The Debutants.

Fringe activity and acoustic performances will also take place across bars and pubs in Hull Old Town, with Garbo’s, Jack & Danny’s, Jaz Bar, The Kingston Hotel, Oscars Bar, Rumours, Fruit, William Wilberforce and Ye Olde Corn Exchange all programming activity over the three days.

Kathryn Shillito, City Centre Manager at HullBID, said: “King Charles is a credible, national musician and there’s already excitement building on social media about his upcoming performance at Hull Trinity Festival.

“This is a free event and it’s all about celebrating Hull’s Old Town, our city centre bars and pubs, and giving local musicians a platform on which to showcase their music.”

The Hull Trinity Festival takes place on Friday 20th, Saturday 21st and Sunday 22nd September in Hull’s Old Town. The event is FREE* to attend with a Main stage in Trinity Square (Fri & Sat only) and performances across Hull Old Town venues. The event is part of Purple Flag Week, celebrating Hull’s accreditation for a safe, vibrant, and well-managed city centre at night.
