Start-up businesses invited to Central Library event
Business Start-up Day is back and bigger than ever for 2018, at Hull Central Library on Thursday 20 September from 1.30pm-7pm.
Do you have a business idea but aren't really sure how to turn it into a reality? Then come to Hull’s Business & IP Centre (BIPC) Start-up Day.
Hull Central Library will host the day in partnership with Santander, Chapter 3 CIC and John Olivant - The Business Success Coach. The day will be jam-packed with free workshops, expert talks and events at the library to equip budding business owners with the tools to turn their start-up dreams into a business reality.
Hear from keynote speaker Dr Max Gowland of Prime Fifty, Santander business banking experts, and meet some of Hull's "Start-up Stars" who will be sharing their experiences.
Workshops and clinics will be on subjects perfect for start-ups and established businesses, covering things like pricing, intellectual property, your business image, finance and more. You'll also have the chance to find out about some of the support available to you at our business marketplace. There’ll even be an opportunity for you to receive free hair & make-up (touch ups) ready for a free professional headshot.
Our “Start-up Stars” panel will talk candidly about taking the plunge from employee, to self-employed, to employer, what they’ve learned along the way, what they wished they had known before they started, and why it was all worth it in the end.
The experienced panel discussion line-up includes:
• Vikki Johnson founder & owner of Fusion Laser Cutting https://lasercuttinghull.co.uk/
• Andy Steele MD of 360 accountants https://www.360accountants.co.uk/
• Rob Lewis of 54 Degrees North https://www.54degreesnorth.co.uk/
• Dr Max Gowland Prime Fifty https://www.primefifty.co.uk/
• Ralph Keeton Ghost Walks Hull http://www.ghostwalkshull.co.uk/
• Vicky Cartwright – Diva Cupcakes – https://www.facebook.com/divascupcakeshull
The workshops are free; however places must be booked online at http://bit.ly/bipchullevents
Michelle Alford, Library Services Director at Hull Culture and Leisure, said: “We are delighted to host the Business Start-up Day at Hull Central Library. The event creates a platform for entrepreneurs to connect with the experts with a range of free talks, workshops and tailored advice designed to get your business idea off to a flying start.”
“This Business Start-up day is just one of the many events taking place in libraries across the city over the coming weeks and months, and reflective of how diverse and versatile a library and community space can be.”
Terry King, from Chapter 3, said: “Both Chapter 3 and the BIPC are focused on enterprise and helping local people start new businesses. I hope people who are thinking about, or have just started a business will come along on the day and pick up lots of inspiration and advice. Including tips on “You and your business image”.
John Olivant, The Business Success Coach, said: "Come along to Business Start-up day, if you're new to business or have been in business for a short time. You'll benefit massively from all we've got for you on the day, including my sessions on pricing where you'll learn how to price for maximum advantage (it’s not what you think) and how to raise your prices without losing any customers. See you there."
Research indicates that businesses who start up a business with the support of the Business & IP Centre network have a far greater chance of being successful. Currently in the UK over 60 per cent of businesses fail within the first three years of trading, but a recent independent evaluation has showed that 90 per cent of businesses that started up with the help of the Centre were still trading after year three.
