Cleanliness and Street Maintenance
“It was warm weather, the smell down a neighbouring side street was unpleasant so I reported it. The Hull BID team came straight away to rectify the problem and since then they’ve monitored it.” – Shadia Thanon, General Manager, Portland Hotel.
Clean streets are a must when it comes to making the city centre a more attractive environment for workers, visitors, residents and investors.
Hull BID’s cleaning and maintenance operative carries out a comprehensive cleaning programme in partnership with the City Council. He uses jet-wash equipment and specialist chemicals and has earned a reputation for responding swiftly and effectively to any problems reported by businesses, usually within 12 hours.
Graffiti is a problem for most urban areas and in the past five years Hull BID has removed over 6000 pieces of graffiti from the city centre – but most people wouldn’t even know it! That’s because our maintenance operative patrols the street in the early hours of the morning and ensures all graffiti is removed often before core business trading hours. Our aim is to remove graffiti within 24 hours of it being reported, and to prevent it from becoming a major problem.
Chewing gum is a nuisance in modern city centres and is another area of activity for Hull BID. Our chewing gum removal service responds to requests from businesses and from street maintenance patrols to remove gum from pavements and from entrances to shops and offices. Our maintenance operative also help to tackle illegal fly-posting activity.
Other works to improve the attractiveness of the city centre include carrying out over 3800 painting jobs in the past five years to smarten up street furniture including railings, bins and lampposts. We also tidy up areas scattered with debris and overgrown with weeds.
